When was CPPA started and why?
CPPA was established in 1922 by a handful of
peace officers to “enhance the profession of law enforcement
and status of the police officer in Colorado.”
Who’s eligible to join CPPA?
Active or retired Peace officers who are P.O.S.T.
certified in Colorado. Associate members
include dispatchers, administrative employees of police and
sheriff’s departments and line staff at Colorado Dept. of
Corrections facilities.
How is CPPA operated?
A
Board of Directors, comprised of nine law enforcement
officers across the state, provide CPPA’s vision and
direction which is implemented by a two-person staff at its
office in Colorado Springs. The Board meets monthly and all CPPA
members are welcome to attend.
How is CPPA funded?
Almost one third of our annual operating
budget currently comes from
telemarketing
campaigns. The rest is from Member
dues, sales of our yearly
Colorado Peace Officers
Statutory Source Book, donations, and commissions from
members-only benefits CPPA Legal Defense Fund and
A+ Auto
and Home Insurance.
Why aren’t contributions to CPPA tax-deductible?
Although CPPA is a non-profit, we can’t issue
tax-deductible receipts because we’re designated a 501 (c)
(8)—not a 501 (c) (3).
What makes CPPA distinctive?
We’re a state-wide association compared to
local police protective or benevolent associations such as
Pueblo and Grand Junction. Many
CPPA members belong to their local association as well,
which often pay for their members’ CPPA dues and, sometimes,
their legal coverage costs.
Why should a peace officer join CPPA?
Of the several plans currently available to
Colorado peace officers, our Legal Defense Fund is
second to none and utilized by nearly half our members.
Half of all CPPAers also utilize discounts offered by
A+
California Casualty Auto & Home Insurance.
Members also appreciate CPPA’s strong
lobbying efforts at the state capitol each legislative
session, our annual
Statutory Source Book, our
Academic Scholarships and our quarterly publication
Law Enforcement Journal.
Other benefits include a $500 death
benefit, a Body Armor (vest) Program and
discounts at three major car rentals and
many others establishments.
How many officers belong to CPPA?
As of April 1, 2008 CPPA had over 2000
members in good standing throughout Colorado. The greater our
numbers the more effective our collective voice.
